Local regulations require Citi Bike riders to be at least 16 years old. Age verification helps meet this requirement and keeps our community safe.
How to verify your age
For most riders, your age eligibility will be predicted using signals such as account age with no action required from you. If we are unable to predict your age eligibility, you can verify your age two ways:
Selfie: Take a photo of yourself
- The selfie you take is sent to Persona, a trusted verification provider, to estimate your age. This is done in accordance with the Privacy Policy and the Biometric Information and Security Policy.
Government ID: Take a photo of your government ID
- The image of the ID you upload is sent to Persona, a trusted verification provider, to validate your ID and verify your age. This is done in accordance with the Privacy Policy.
Accepted ID types
Driver's licenses and passports from 200+ countries and US municipal/state IDs are accepted.
My selfie didn’t work, what now?
If your age couldn’t be verified with a selfie, you’ll need to upload a photo of your government ID to complete the process. Accepted forms of ID include driver’s licenses, passports, state IDs, city IDs, and permanent resident cards from 200+ countries.
What happens if I don’t verify my age?
You won’t be able to unlock or ride bikes until you complete age verification.
I lost access to Citi Bike - how do I get it back?
Verify your age using a selfie or government ID. Once you’ve successfully verified your age, you’ll be able to ride again right away, or within 24 hours if further review is needed.
What happens if I verify my age but I’m under 16?
If verification determines you’re under 16, you can’t ride Citi Bike. Your account information will be deleted in accordance with applicable local and federal regulations, the Privacy Policy, and the Terms of Service. You can create a new account when you turn 16 and verify your age to ride.
How your information is used
Your selfie or government ID is encrypted and processed securely through Persona, a trusted verification provider.
Your information is stored and maintained as described in the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Service. See the Biometric Information and Security Policy to learn more about how your data is used, stored, and protected.
